I can hear a sigh of relief: The Mac Pro is getting updated

We have been waiting for over 2 years now and in the end it wasn’t clear if the Mac Pro continues to be the heart of Mac based post production. But now the rumors are thickening and it’s obvious that there is an update. I myself didn’t believe it anymore – I thought Apple is going to abandon the pro market altogether in favor of new consumer products. I started looking at HP workstations but the idea of using Windows still makes my brain hurt.

The new Mac Pro is going to take advantage of the speed of the new Intel Xeon E5 chip that already has been released in March 2012 and prices are about the same as now.

But nevertheless since the release of Final Cut X a lot of people are doubting Apple’s loyalty towards the pro market since it has become a margin market for their products. Well – at least for the next 2 years we will be safe.
UPDATE: The new Mac Pro is out and it’s just a minor upgrade. What does this mean? I don’t know. I’m done speculating and I feel disappointed.

UPDATE 2:

Tim Cook confirmed in an email to a customer that Apple is not done with the Mac Pro.

Thanks for your email. Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn’t have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today’s event, don’t worry as we’re working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model today.

 Great news!

  1. What makes my brain hurt is people who think that one operating system is so superior to another. You click on the icon and it brings up the same app as the other system (with the exception of Final Cut Pro which has the same capabilities as Premiere). So silly. You learn to be flexible and it is you, not the tools that matter. Locked on to one platform and one tool set is going to bite you in the end.
